As with all Main Matches:

To exchange garnets, simply declare your intention to do so in the current game thread in your confessional.
Your public total will not be revealed until after the Main Match is completed, meaning that you can keep garnet purchases and exchanges a secret, provided their effects are not made public.

Have you not played Love Letter before? It's one of the most elegantly designed games I've ever played. It's 16 cards total, but the amount of depth and play here is incredible. The game is like... 7-15 bucks from any decent game store, and the entire game fits in a small pouch. Perfect for taking to friend's places or long drives/flights or anything like that.
